French blending: the chic technique for seamless gray hair

A new trend in embracing one's natural grays has emerged, and it's as stylish as it sounds: French blending. This bespoke color application technique, created by L'Oréal Professionnel, strategically places color to blend gray strands seamlessly into the overall hue.

How it works

L'Oréal Professionnel ambassador Krista Bartik explains that there are three types of French blending: first blending, retouch blending, and total blending. The choice depends on the amount of grays.

First blending adds soft, natural-looking lowlights and clusters of grays. Ideal for those just starting to go gray. Retouch blending maintains the blended look by softening regrowth lines and adding dimension. Total blending addresses the entire head, using techniques like balayage for a diffused, natural finish.

Colorists like Kadi Lee say French blending works for all hair textures, as each stylist adapts the application to the client's specific needs. For fine, straight hair, Jenna Perry uses delicate, minimal highlights to avoid harsh lines. Wavy hair is forgiving, allowing Perry to place ribbon-like highlights through natural bends. Coily and curly hair's built-in dimension makes blending effortless, but Lee prefers a comb-through for even saturation.

French blending vs. gray blending

French blending vs. gray blending

While both techniques diffuse grays, French blending is a more precise, hand-painted approach. Krista Bartik notes that the main difference is French blending is tailored to each client, whereas general gray blending is softer and lower maintenance. Perry suggests choosing French blending for a more elevated look.

Gray hair care

Regardless of the blending method, gray hair requires special care. Kadi Lee recommends regular gloss treatments, moisturizing products, and a color-protecting at-home routine. Bartik suggests L'Oréal Professionnel's Metal Detox Hair Mask to prevent fading. Perry recommends Olaplex treatments and violet shampoos for brightness and softness.
