Zinc face mask frenzy: tiktok's latest skincare obsession – is it actually good for you?
The internet’s suddenly obsessed with a thick, white zinc oxide paste – and the frantic application of opaque layers on the face. Once relegated to diaper rash creams and sunscreens, this ingredient is now trending on TikTok as an overnight Beauty hack, promising calmer, clearer skin. But is this a legitimate skincare solution, or just another fleeting internet fad?
The unexpected rise of zinc oxide
Experts are weighing in on the trend, revealing the surprising science behind this resurfacing remedy. Zinc oxide, a mineral traditionally used for its soothing and protective properties, is experiencing a major resurgence thanks to the viral enthusiasm of social media.
Dr. Zeba Umar, a tricologist and medical practitioner, explains that zinc is a ‘skin-friendly mineral’ known for its calming, healing, and anti-inflammatory effects. “Traditionally, zinc oxide has been used in everything from diaper rash creams or sunscreens because it protects and calms the skin really well, which is why it’s still such a staple in dermatology and aesthetic skincare today,” she notes.

Zinc oxide vs. zinc pca: understanding the ingredients
It's important to understand that zinc appears in two main forms: zinc oxide and zinc PCA. Dr. Maryam Zamani, an oculoplastic surgeon, clarifies that “Zinc oxide is a mineral compound that forms a protective interface on the skin, reflecting ultraviolet radiation and reducing environmental insult. It has long been used in dermatology for its calming, barrier-reinforcing, and wound-healing properties.”
“Zinc PCA is more bioactive, influencing sebum regulation and microbial balance,” she adds. “Traditionally, zinc has been associated with repair, protection, and control, particularly in compromised or reactive skin states.” Essentially, zinc oxide provides broad-spectrum physical photoprotection – a vital shield against sun damage – while zinc PCA focuses on regulating oil production and balancing the skin’s microbiome.

The appeal of ‘overnight’ recovery
The key to the trend’s success is its immediate gratification. After a single application, skin can appear noticeably calmer and less inflamed. This rapid improvement—a tangible result in a world of complex and often disappointing skincare routines—is undeniably appealing. Dr. Umar highlights that
