Luxury riviera rush: brands invade capri, saint-tropez as vacation spending soars
A stroll along Capri’s Via Camerelle or Saint-Tropez’s Place de la Garonne used to reveal a dearth of affordable vacation purchases – sub-thousand-euro options were scarce. This summer, however, a wave of luxury brands like Cult Gaia, Alo, and La DoubleJ are establishing a foothold in these glamorous locales, capitalizing on a trend: increasingly accessible European getaways.
The riviera’s new luxury landscape
Fueled by cheaper hotels and Airbnb splits, tourists are splurging on experiences and purchases alongside their trips. As luxury consultant Michal Kurtis points out, “It’s about tying those vacation purchases to a story – a chic adventure rather than just buying the same item a few subway stops away.” This demand for ‘contextual luxury’ is driving a boom in accessible brands, under $1,000, challenging the dominance of ultra-high-end players.
Brands are strategically deploying temporary spaces – pop-ups and short-term collaborations – to test demand and refine their strategies before committing to long-term investments. Same Swim, for instance, is building permanent boutiques in Capri and Saint-Tropez, fueled by data showing consistent, high-demand sales from last year’s Saint-Tropez pop-up – lines stretching down the street the entire summer.

Strategic positioning & brand storytelling
“Our customer wants to feel like they're acquiring an ‘It-girl vacation closet’ without emptying their wallet,” says Shea Marie, co-founder of Same Swim. But retail space remains a premium, and logistical hurdles – language barriers, local contractor coordination – are significant, particularly in these coastal destinations. Farm Rio, too, acknowledges the complexities of managing temporary projects across multiple countries, ensuring a cohesive brand experience.
Staud, leveraging an influencer trip to the Amalfi Coast, is demonstrating a clever workaround – bringing a slice of Europe to its US stores. This highlights a key element: brands must offer exclusive capsules or pieces tailored to each location, creating a sense of exclusivity and boosting sales. The longer brands can remain in these hotspots, the greater the potential for engagement and brand awareness.

Sustainable growth through strategic partnerships
While many brands are embracing permanent storefronts for the first time, the success of past pop-ups serves as a powerful indicator of market demand. Farm Rio’s CEO, Fabio Barreto, citing strong engagement, both in sales and social media, is confident in the potential of this expansion. “Across these locations, we saw strong engagement from both local consumers and international travelers,” he explains, referencing successful pop-ups in Mykonos and Saint-Tropez. Brands like Alo and Cult Gaia are prioritizing strategic partnerships – Jondal beach club location for Farm Rio, and Jasmin Larian Hekmat's patient approach to securing the
