Hermès reinventing time: skeletonized classics redefine watchmaking

Hermès isn’t interested in incremental improvements; they’re actively dismantling expectations. This week, the storied French brand unveiled a strikingly bold approach to two of its most recognizable timepieces – the H08 and the Slim D’Hermès – both rendered in a daring skeletonized style.

A shattering of tradition

The H08, first released in 2021 as a surprisingly modern counterpoint to their heritage, has been reimagined as the H08 Squelette. This iteration, constructed from blackened titanium and featuring those instantly-recognizable Art Deco numerals, now reveals the intricate workings of its in-house H1978S automatic movement. It’s a calculated provocation, a statement that craftsmanship isn’t about hiding complexity, but showcasing it.

But the skeletonization doesn’t stop there. Hermès simultaneously launched the Slim D’Hermès Squelette Lune, a 39.5mm variation on the 2015 original. This timepiece shrinks the mechanics to a mere 3.57mm – a testament to their engineering prowess – and incorporates a double moon phase display, a subtle yet sophisticated addition.

Both watches are available in two distinct executions. The H08 Squelette offers a choice between a striking blue Zanzibar dial paired with a matching rubber strap, or a grayscale option with a black rubber alternative. Conversely, the Slim D’Hermès Squelette Lune arrives in either Grade 5 Titanium – a material chosen for its lightness and durability – or platinum, lending an air of restrained luxury. The movements themselves are powered by gold micro rotors, a deliberate choice that adds a touch of opulence to the exposed mechanics. The H1953 movement, visible through the bead-blasted and polished bridges, is a clear indication of Hermès’s commitment to in-house development.

Essentially, Hermès isn’t simply offering skeletonized watches; they’re presenting a new vocabulary for luxury timekeeping – one that prioritizes audacious design and transparent mechanical beauty. The numbers speak for themselves: a bolder, more deliberate approach to a timeless category.
