Protein party: spirited drinks make a splash

In a trend that's both surprising and sensible, protein is making a splash in the world of cocktails. From espresso martinis to bone-infused sours, these spirited drinks combine the numbing effects of alcohol with the muscle-building benefits of protein.

The rise of protein cocktails

It all started with the Espresso Proteini, a martini that mixed 10 grams of protein powder with Buffalo Wild Wings' dry rub. But protein cocktails have been around for much longer, often in the form of egg whites in old-fashioned sours.

Now, bartenders are getting bolder, incorporating sesame seeds, beef broth, and even chicken bones into their recipes. At Warrenpeace in Tribeca, the Balkan Breakfast combines sesame seeds with espresso liqueur and cold brew for a plant-based protein boost. Meanwhile, State Park Bar in Cambridge serves up a Chicken Soup Martini, made by dissolving roasted chicken bones in acid and adding a dash to the drink.

But does this mean gym bros might have a new post-workout cocktail option? Christopher Wolstenholme, founder of Mate! protein cocktails, says that while alcohol does inhibit muscle growth, a single or two drinks won't make a significant difference. And there might even be some benefits, like reduced hangovers and a fuller feeling thanks to the protein.

As the world of booze continues to innovate, it's clear that protein cocktails are here to stay. So the next time you're at the bar, you might just find yourself sipping on a drink that's as good for your muscles as it is for your taste buds.
