How an early dinner revolutionized my sleep (and mornings)

For years, I've struggled with poor sleep, despite being meticulous about the rest of my Health and wellness routine. My Oura ring and dark circles under my eyes were a testament to my restlessness, with a typical bedtime often creeping past 2 a.m. and an early alarm clock ringing at 7 a.m. every day.

Late dinners were the culprit

Although I'd tried various strategies to improve my sleep, from optimizing my evening routine to banning my phone from the bedroom, the real solution eluded me. until I connected the dots between my late-night dinners and my sleepless nights.

It turns out that eating a large meal close to bedtime can disrupt the body's natural rhythms and lead to poor sleep quality. Insulin sensitivity drops in the evening, making it harder for the body to process sugar efficiently. Meanwhile, the body's metabolism and digestion slow down, preparing for rest. Consuming a heavy meal during this time period can put the body into active digestive mode, making it harder to fall and stay asleep.

An experiment in early dinners

An experiment in early dinners

Convinced that dinner time was the key, I decided to conduct an experiment. For the past month, I've been eating dinner no later than 6 p.m. And the results have been nothing short of remarkable.

First and foremost, my sleep schedule has improved dramatically. When I eat earlier, I fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly. My mornings have also transformed - I wake up easily, no longer dragging myself out of bed. And the morning fog that once plagued me has lifted, replaced by a renewed sense of alertness and focus.

Additionally, I've noticed a decrease in bloating, likely due to the fact that I have more time to engage in light physical activity after dinner before heading to bed. Finally, I've found that I can now enjoy a more varied and balanced diet, including carbohydrates and protein-rich foods that I previously avoided at night due to concerns about their impact on my sleep.

Of course, I'm not rigidly adhering to this new routine - there are evenings when a late dinner is unavoidable, like when socializing with friends. But for the most part, I've found that eating earlier has become second nature, and the benefits have been undeniable.
