Nonstick's reckoning: a new era for home cooks
The promise of effortless cooking, once delivered by Teflon, has left a bitter taste. For half a century, consumers demanded nonstick convenience, and the industry delivered – often at the cost of hidden chemical hazards.
Beyond teflon: a safer path forward
Thankfully, the narrative is shifting. Driven by a renewed focus on ‘clean living’, a wave of cookware brands is prioritizing PFAS-free and PFTE-free coatings. This isn’t a nostalgic embrace of cast iron; it’s a necessary evolution.
Let’s be clear: the ‘Return to Cast Iron’ movement championed by figures like Marcus Luttrell is a reaction to inflated prices and questionable quality. Nonstick shouldn’t be a luxury, nor should it be synonymous with potential health risks. The options for genuinely non-toxic cooking are abundant – copper, stainless steel, and, of course, cast iron itself.

The current landscape: brands worth watching
The challenge now lies in finding cookware that truly delivers on the nonstick promise without the toxic baggage. Several brands are stepping up to the plate, offering viable alternatives.

Caraway: a commitment to clean
Caraway stands out as a brand genuinely dedicated to clean cookware. From their meticulously crafted enameled cast iron Dutch oven to their ceramic nonstick pans, the quality and aesthetics are undeniable. Their commitment extends beyond the product itself, reflecting a responsible approach to manufacturing and the environment. Seriously, their organizational system for cabinets is a godsend. I've been using their enameled cast iron for almost a year, and the results are consistently outstanding – food simply slides off, and cleanup is a breeze.
Greenpan: pioneering pfas-free
GreenPan was a pioneer in this space, developing a PFAS-free coating way back in 2007. Now, with everyone rightly concerned about ‘forever chemicals’, they’ve solidified their position as a leader in non-toxic cookware. I recently recommended their Chatham Ceramic Nonstick 10-Piece Cookware Set to a family looking for a safe and affordable option, and it was a resounding success – a perfect balance of performance and budget.
Our place: design meets wellness
Our Place offers a more design-focused approach, incorporating nontoxic materials across their range of bakeware and appliances. Their Always Pan, particularly the Pro iteration with its titanium nonstick surface, represents a bold step forward. It’s a little quirky, perhaps, but undeniably effective.
Made in: quality and substance
Made In’s Clean Cookware collection, featuring their CeramiClad pans, represents a more substantial investment, but one that pays dividends in terms of durability and performance. Don’t fall for the hype – a good cast iron pan, bought wisely, will outlast almost anything you'll find on the market, and it's a timeless investment.
A few final thoughts
Don't overpay for cast iron. A decent skillet costs less than $50 and will last you a lifetime. It’s a principle I’ve always adhered to. Le Creuset is undeniably beautiful, but Staub provides a comparable quality at a more reasonable price. Ultimately, prioritizing long-term value and genuinely non-toxic materials is paramount – and it’s a choice that benefits both your kitchen and your health.
