This week, the young German driver returned to the track at Silverstone, testing the Aston Martin Aramco and PREMA Racing F1 ACADEMY cars, a critical step towards her ambitious goal of competing in the premier series.

From karting prodigy to f1 aspirant

At just ten years old, Paatz already demonstrated exceptional talent in karting, a trajectory that has culminated in a coveted spot within the F1 ACADEMY. Just seven years later, she’s secured a position, partnering with established giants Aston Martin Aramco and PREMA Racing – a remarkable achievement for a driver still navigating the early stages of her career. ‘Working with the team at PREMA, and Aston Martin Aramco, it’s just a pretty amazing experience,’ she stated during a phone interview, highlighting the invaluable support she’s receiving.

Shanghai’s close call

Her initial foray into the ACADEMY was promising, culminating in a strong performance during the Shanghai weekend, narrowly missing the points. But Paatz isn’t dwelling on near misses. She’s approaching the upcoming Montreal race with a renewed focus and a clear strategy. The challenge in Shanghai wasn't a failure, she explained, but a valuable lesson in qualifying pressure—a hurdle now being meticulously addressed. ‘We came from the back due to the Quali issue,’ she admits, ‘but we managed to find ourselves almost into the points, which is still a pretty good result.’

More than just speed

Beyond the on-track performance, Paatz's experience has been enriched by unexpected connections. A brief encounter with Mickey Mouse in China proved to be a surprisingly delightful moment – a testament to the broader appeal of motorsport. The outpouring of support from fans, particularly the flood of personalized gifts and messages, has been incredibly motivating. ‘What I heard the most was “Mathilda can I take a picture?”’ she recounts, laughing. ‘It’s actually so cool because ‘what do you mean they think I’m such a cool person they want to have me in their gallery?’

Learning from the best

Paatz credits Jessica Hawkins, head of the F1 ACADEMY at Aston Martin Aramco, with providing crucial guidance. Hawkins’ calm demeanor and strategic mindset have proven invaluable, helping Paatz maintain composure under pressure. ‘She brings a lot of experience and I just try to soak up everything,’ Paatz says, emphasizing the importance of mentorship. ‘What I really like is her positive, but still focused mindset.’

Silverstone: a measured approach

Heading into Silverstone testing, Paatz is adopting a pragmatic approach. While aiming for maximum performance, she’s prioritizing refinement and gaining a deeper understanding of the car. ‘I’m feeling pretty good and don’t have too high expectations,’ she comments. ‘We’ve had such a long break and I just can’t wait.’ The Montreal race – scheduled for May 22-24 – represents a critical juncture, an opportunity to build upon her early progress and solidify her position within the ACADEMY. Her ultimate goal? To consistently deliver points and demonstrate her potential as a future F1 star. And, judging by her infectious enthusiasm, Paatz is well on her way.
